Abstract:
Increased visibility of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive singers in the last fifteen years has led to increased research and publication on the topic of gender-inclusive teaching pedagogy. While there is overlap between teaching transgender singers in the private voice studio versus in a choral rehearsal, there are topics that may feel gendered that are unique to the choral rehearsal, such as vocal parts, attire, and choral ensemble names, and there has been very little published research specific to teaching transgender singers in the choral ensemble. It is important that choral conductors learn about gender-inclusive pedagogy and how to create gender-affirming spaces in order to become more effective and supportive teachers and help retain transgender and gender-expansive singers in choral programs. The purpose of this study is to investigate gender-affirming practices in the choral ensemble with the goal of better understanding practices which help singers of all genders feel welcomed and affirmed. The study will consist of three parts: open-ended interviews with directors of trans choirs and other key informants, observations of rehearsals of trans choirs, and focus groups with members of trans choirs in three different cities in the United States.Expected outcomes include a greater understanding of practices which help singers of all genders feel welcomed and affirmed in a choral ensemble and which do not. There has been very little published research specific to teaching transgender singers in the choral ensemble and this study could help create a greater understanding of gender-affirming practices. Potential impact includes choral conductors becoming more effective and supportive conductors, which could lead to better retention of transgender and gender-expansive singers in choral programs and more welcoming and affirming spaces for all.
