Abstract:

The Socioeconomic Inclusivity Magnifier (SESMag) project is a tool that was developed to help enhance inclusivity across socioeconomic backgrounds. This research initiative seeks to address the discrepancies in technology utilization that stem from variations in socioeconomic status (SES), which have historically influenced both access to and engagement with digital learning environments. The methodology involves the incorporation of the SESMag framework into classroom assignments. These assignments are then used as data points for analyzing the effectiveness of SESMag in real-time educational settings. The initial phase of the study included summer workshops with participating professors, focusing on helping them implement SESMag methods into their chosen assignments, effectively demonstrating the ease of implementation in the classroom and the potential impact of this approach on educational practices. To further validate the efficacy of this approach, the study requires participants' consent for the anonymous review and analysis of their homework assignments. This data will help refine and optimize teaching methods and software design to foster a more inclusive educational landscape. Participants are assured that no personal data will be collected, maintaining confidentiality and focusing solely on improving educational inclusivity. The study will span approximately four years, tracking the progress of students from year to year to determine the effectiveness of implemented teaching methods on educational outcomes, particularly when these methods are not explicitly highlighted. As SESMag continues to evolve, a proposed future component of the project involves illustrating the long-term commitment to enhancing educational access and engagement through innovative research. Participation in this study not only contributes to academic research but also offers a direct benefit to future students by promoting a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
