Abstract:

This study aimed to research the effects of bilingual education programs on immigrant students' identities, multilingual cognitive abilities, and social communication. Data for this study was gathered using a mixed-method approach that included interviews and online questionnaires. This study had four participants: two students and two professors who are or were in bilingual education. Results from the student questionnaire and interviews found that bilingual education consistently affects language learning and shows a positive correlation between academic success and bilingual education due to increased comprehension and confidence during class activities. The student's responses also showed that students' links to American culture are positively impacted by bilingual education. However, the degree of these ties varies according to the individual and their experiences. The results from the professor's questionnaire and interviews found that while the program partially satisfies the student's needs, it could be improved to offer more comprehensive support for their cultural and academic development. Both professors in the interview suggested that bilingual education could be improved by increasing the number of scholarships available to immigrant students and having better resources like books or assistance from native English speakers. The study's findings will enhance bilingual education programs and spread awareness of inclusivity and the challenges faced by many immigrant children in the US. Future studies should consider demographic factors to better comprehend bilingual education without generalizing the experiences of all immigrant students. Doing long-term research on this topic will also provide insight into the long-term effects of bilingual education on student outcomes.
