Abstract:
Hosting the Super Bowl has significant economic, social, and infrastructural effects on host cities, generating both opportunities and challenges. In the short term, cities typically experience increased economic activity due to an influx of visitors, leading to higher hotel occupancy, elevated room rates, and increased spending at restaurants, bars, retail businesses, and transportation services. The event also creates temporary employment related to hospitality, security, and event management. These impacts are often cited as producing hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity, although estimates vary widely depending on evaluation methods.Beyond direct financial effects, hosting the Super Bowl can enhance a city’s national and international visibility, strengthen its brand, and foster civic pride among residents. These intangible benefits may support future tourism, business investment, and long-term reputation building. Additionally, infrastructure improvements made in preparation for the event can provide lasting value if aligned with broader urban development goals. However, hosting the Super Bowl also involves substantial public costs, including expenditures on security, transportation, and stadium-related services. Critics argue that economic benefits may be overstated due to displacement of regular economic activity and unequal distribution of gains. Overall, the impact of hosting the Super Bowl depends largely on local planning, existing economic conditions, and how effectively cities leverage the event for long-term benefits.
