Abstract:

According to Eser’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Creative Industry Statistics (2025), only 10% of minority creatives report having access to mentorship, and just 17% of advertising campaigns feature diverse representation, revealing deep systemic inequities that shape both opportunity and the creative work produced. Wilkie et al.’s Inclusivity in Advertising (2023) further demonstrates that inclusive campaigns strengthen audience trust, cultural resonance, and brand loyalty. This proves that representation is not only ethical but creatively indispensable. Insights from NiRey Reynolds, Global Director of Creative Excellence at Momentum Worldwide, reinforce that “real progress isn’t about quotas; it takes a true cultural shift and honest, sometimes uncomfortable conversations within our agencies.” For example, only 20% of creative directors in advertising are from diverse backgrounds (Eser, 2025), underscoring how underrepresented voices remain excluded from decision-making power.

To bridge these gaps, the proposed solution is to create Command Shift, a national, student-led design movement that connects underrepresented emerging creatives with industry leaders through immersive, city-based events. By transforming advocacy into action, Command Shift aims to rebuild the foundation of the advertising industry to reflect authentic, diverse creative voices shaping the future.
