Abstract:
This study examines the profitability performance of Mastercard Incorporated and PayPal Holdings, Inc. from 2021 to 2024, with the objective of understanding how different business models within the digital payment industry influence profitability and capital efficiency. Mastercard operates primarily as a global payment network with a light-asset, transaction-based model, while PayPal functions as a digital payment platform offering a broader range of consumer and merchant services.
Using secondary financial data obtained from publicly available sources, including company investor relations websites and Yahoo Financial databases, this research applies profitability ratio analysis to evaluate and compare the financial performance of the two firms. Key profitability measures include gross profit margin, operating profit margin, net profit margin, return on equity (ROE), and return on assets (ROA). These ratios assess each company’s ability to generate profits from sales, assets, and shareholders’ equity.
The results indicate that Mastercard consistently outperforms PayPal across all profitability metrics. Mastercard demonstrates exceptionally high and stable profit margins, as well as significantly higher ROE and ROA, reflecting strong operational efficiency and effective use of capital. In contrast, PayPal shows lower margins and returns, although some improvement is observed in operating performance over the study period. These differences highlight the impact of business structure and cost composition on financial outcomes.
Overall, the findings suggest that network-based payment firms like Mastercard tend to achieve superior profitability compared to platform-based payment providers such as PayPal. This study contributes to a clearer understanding of profitability dynamics within the payment services industry and provides insights useful for investors and financial analysts.
