Abstract:
The newly established Sustainability Squad at Kean University is changing the future of sustainability on college campuses. Inspired by the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the Squad’s aims extend beyond environmental concerns to address and highlight other human rights issues such as gender equity, education, responsible consumption, and climate action. The Squad’s work sheds light on regional, national, and global inequalities that prevent access to these rights and thereby limit the impact of the sustainability movement. Consisting with graduate and undergraduate students, the Squad offers original programs, assisting faculty and staff with innovative scholarly research, and working with community partners to create meaningful change. The Squad’s primary goal is to demonstrate that the future of sustainability is based on interdisciplinary discussions, modern technology, and student leadership. This research project will showcase how their efforts not only impact Kean University but also inspire students to see themselves as part of a larger movement.
