Abstract:

The Old Jail of Nantucket, constructed in 1805, is one of the island’s earliest surviving civic buildings. Despite its historical significance, many visitors pass the structure without understanding what it is or why it matters. This project investigates how research-driven design can transform that overlooked moment into an accessible public history experience.

In collaboration with the Nantucket Historical Association, we analyzed archival materials and handwritten historical records to better understand the jail’s history, including stories of escape and confinement. These accounts were organized into thematic storylines that informed the design of an exterior graphic supported by QR-based storytelling.

This presentation shares how historical research, site visits, and narrative structuring shaped the final design, offering a model for how overlooked landmarks can be reintroduced to the public through thoughtful interpretation.
