Abstract:
Over the summer of 2025, I completed a hands-on internship at The Raptor Trust wild bird rehabilitation center in Millington, New Jersey. I assisted in the care and release of hundreds of avian patients from a variety of native species, from nestling songbirds to adult raptors and waterfowl. This poster documents the important rehabilitation practices I learned and the key steps involved in supporting avian rehabilitation and release back to the wild. My responsibilities included intake processing, assessing initial conditions, preparing food for a variety of diets, and following proper husbandry procedures and feeding schedules. I also gained experience handfeeding orphaned birds with appropriate diets and assessing/treating minor injuries. In addition, under the guidance of senior staff members, I prepared daily medications, ensuring correct dosages, timing, and handling protocols. These experiences provided me with insight into the challenges of caring for diverse avian patients and highlighted how best practices in wildlife rehabilitation contribute to positive outcomes for these patients.
