Abstract:

This self portrait is a study of my full body using charcoal and graphite on archival paper. The scale of this piece requires two sheets of 22x30" paper making an overall 30x40" in size. There is a foreshortened perspective that adds depth to the image by making the boot the largest subject to suggest it is closest to the viewer. Throughout the piece, values of grey are balanced and unified to differentiate lights and shadows, especially seen in the sleeves.I chose this pose, attire, and setting to represent who I am today. During my twelve year relationship, six of those years being a wife, I lost who I was. I slowly and unknowingly changed my style and taste in music to feel like I 'fit' with my husband. After my separation and divorce, I slowly came back to my roots and found happiness in the things I and I only enjoyed. There was no more 'we', only I. Only I feel comfortable in these boots; I am unapologetically myself again. The painting on the wall is a replica of what my son had painted, otherwise I have placed myself in an unfurnished room. To me, that represents materials are insignificant in finding yourself.
