Abstract:

This presentation explores the customization and adaptability of prefabricated modular homes as an innovative solution to the contemporary housing crisis. With traditional housing markets increasingly inaccessible, there is a pressing need for affordable, flexible, and sustainable alternatives. Modular homes, constructed off-site in controlled factory settings and then assembled on location, offer significant advantages including reduced construction time, minimized waste, and cost-effectiveness.Using a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative interviews with industry experts and a quantitative analysis of various case studies, this research investigates how modular homes can be tailored to meet individual needs and adapt to diverse environmental conditions, such as extreme climates, urban settings, and confined spaces. Findings indicate that modular homes can be designed with high levels of customization, offering diverse layout options, material selections, and integrated technologies, that not only enhance functionality but also align with aesthetic preferences. Additionally, the adaptability of modular homes is demonstrated by their successful application in a range of settings, highlighting their potential to contribute to sustainable and resilient housing solutions.Despite challenges including regulatory barriers and persistent public perceptions of prefabrication, advancements in technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D printing are paving the way for improved design, construction, and assembly processes. This presentation will provide a comprehensive blueprint for developing customizable, affordable, and environmentally adaptable modular homes, offering practical insights for policymakers, developers, and consumers aimed at fostering resilient and inclusive communities.
