Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to analyze the decline of shopping malls and find possible solutions to revive malls. To aid the research, a questionnaire was distributed to participants via social media and online messages. The survey collected demographic information and responses to multiple-choice and open-ended questions about their shopping preferences and beliefs on the best way to fix the decline of shopping malls in the United States. This study used a mixed-methods approach that collected both qualitative and quantitative data. Over a two-week period, 49 participants answered 12 questions. The data resulted in a consensus that online shopping has brought a decline in online shopping and it is believed that malls can be repurposed or redeveloped and better-utilized. The results of the study, although limited, can be translated across the entire country as a way to bring regrowth to shopping malls.
