Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to find the benefits of assistive technology in the classroom settings from pre-school through 3rd grade, specifically for students with disabilities. According to the Individual with Disabilities Education Act, “assistive technology device means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability.” (34 CFR § 300.5, 2017) The researcher attempted to determine if the school districts which purchased assistive technology devices saw a positive impact in the learning outcomes for students who are most at risk so that they may continue to learn in an inclusive environment. The study consisted of a 20 question survey completed by fellow educators via Microsoft Forms. Assistive technology was designed to make major aspects of the lives of people with disabilities less complicated and to help foster a sense of independence. The potential positive impacts of the research findings may have the ability to persuade school boards of education to invest in the various forms of assistive technology, thus investing in the future of students. Research reveals that the number of students with disabilities in general education settings continue to rise. Some of our youngest learners are struggling across numerous fields including, but not limited to physical capabilities, social/emotional development, academics and communication skills. Great strides in technology are helping students with disabilities overcome the hurdles that stand in their way and put them on the same level, or as close to, as their general education peers.
