Abstract:

Title: Nurses' Attitude Towards Bedside Shift Report: Effect On Patient SafetyAuthor: Nkechi Okoroji, Department of Nursing, Kean UniversityAbstract:Introduction: The bedside shift report (BSR) is a vital component of patient-centered care, enhancing communication, transparency, patient safety, and outcomes. Nurses’ attitudes are crucial to the successful implementation of BSR. This review explores the impact of nurses’ attitudes on BSR quality and outcomes.PICO question: Among nurses on care units (P), how does nurses' attitude tobedside shift report (I) compared to traditional shift reports (C) affect patient safety and satisfaction (O)?"Method: The article search was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, a limited search of the CINAHL database was performed using keywords like “bedside shift report” and “emergency activation.” The second phase involved a broader search across CINAHL, EBSCOhost, PubMed, and other relevant databases, using terms like “bedside handover,” “patient safety,” and “nurses’ attitude,” The search spanned from 1993 to 2024 to capture relevant studies. In the third phase, articles were reviewed for relevance to the PICOT question. 52 articles were retrieved, with three ultimately selected based on relevance and quality. Results: The results revealed that negative attitudes among nurses, which were frequently influenced by factors such as time constraints, patient privacy, resistance to change, and other challenges, affected the successful implementation of BSR. These attitudes created obstacles in the process, increasing the likelihood of errors and leading to incomplete or ineffective execution of BSR, which compromised patient safety and quality of care. Conclusion: This review emphasizes the importance of fostering a positive attitude towards BSR through training, supportive organizational culture, and addressing barriers that negatively impact patient care to promote the benefits of bedside shift report. Keywords: nurses’ attitude, bedside shift report, healthcare teams
