Abstract:

“Homesick” is a self-portrait drawing made in charcoal which looks to attract the viewers not only by their eyes but also by their hearts. This drawing talks about being trapped and having nowhere to go, which can be interpreted as something literal or emotional. There is snow outside and she is hiding inside a box, feeling trapped inside of it but also knowing that she can’t go outside of it and face the cold, even though the cold is already getting to her as we can see by the lines on her legs and arms, which represents how broken she is or the roots from the trees growing on her. The eyes are connected to the ones of the viewer as if she could see through the paper, this could be interpreted as if she is asking for help, looking for some type of comfort, or she is just looking directly at the viewers as if the viewer is also inside the box with her.My main message with this artwork is to give more awareness to depression; feelings like sadness, loneliness, or even emptiness. The name “Homesick” comes from missing how she used to feel before. “Wanting to go back home” As wanting to go back to how things used to be or how she used to feel. My goal is to be able to connect with the viewer through my art, and give them a sense of accompaniment.
